OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has found himself in the middle of a new controversy after his sister Ann Altman filed a sexual assault lawsuit against him. In the lawsuit filed at the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Missouri, she alleged that Altman sexually abused her between the years 1997 and 2006 at their family home in Clayton when she was three and Sam was 12. The last instance allegedly occurred when Altman was over 18. While the legal proceedings are yet to commence, the OpenAI CEO has issued a joint statement with his mother Connie, and his brothers Jack and Max, strongly denying the allegations.
Taking to the microblogging platform X on Wednesday, January 8, Altman shared an elaborate statement explaining that their entire family loves his sister and is concerned about her well-being, further highlighting that she has been facing mental health issues over the years. It mentioned that the family had been supportive of her by providing financial support, paying her bills, covering her rent and medical bills, finding employment opportunities, and even buying her a house.
Altman added that she continues to demand money from the family and now escalated the matter by making “deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims” about the family, especially Sam Altman.
“Over the years, she has accused members of our family of improperly withholding our father’s 401K funds, hacking her Wi-Fi, and shadowbanning her from various websites including ChatGPT, Twitter, and more. The worst allegation she has made is that she was sexually abused by Sam as a child and others. Her claims have evolved drastically over the years. Newly for this lawsuit, they now include allegations of incidents where Sam was over 18,” the statement read. It asserted that the claims are completely untrue and that they have caused immense pain to the family.
In line with the family’s claims about her mental health challenges, the statement added that she continues to refuse conventional treatment.
Allegations Against Sam Altman
The lawsuit filed by Ann Altman claims that the abusive activities took “over several times per week” and included “oral s*x and penetration,” as per a CNBC report. It also added that Ann Altman experienced “emotional distress, mental anguish and depression” as a “direct and proximate result of the foregoing acts of sexual assault.”
